Jazz every Wednesday at the Heathcote, Leytonstone

12 11 2009

East London’s favourite jazz jam

Come to play, sing, or listen, every Wednesday evening at:

HEATHCOTE ARMS, 344 Grove Green Road, E11 4EA

House Band & Jazz Jam Session 8:00 – 11pm (£4: donation to the house band)

Our exceptionally talented house band provides the perfect setting for weekly evenings of stimulating jazz.

Many of London’s emerging jazz talents sit in with the band, producing delightfully imaginative performances. This is jazz at its most enjoyable.

A jammer’s jam session

For performers looking for the chance to play or sing alongside fine musicians in a warm, friendly environment, this is the jam session for you. Each evening there are plenty of performance slots as well as opportunities to solo with others. It’s audience-friendly too.

Bring your friends

Please bring your friends. They’ll enjoy the friendly atmosphere as well as the good music. Drinks and food are cheap -  Wednesday night is Curry Night! There are even a few big screens around if they need to check up on the football … And there are two guest Real Ales on tap. Usually.

Plan your journey

This could be the most convenient jam session in London – just a few minutes walk from the Central Line, and not much further from the Overground and the A12. So no problem in getting here with your baritone sax or double bass (valve trombones: please enquire). And there’s a W15 bus-stop right outside.

Congratulations to Rachel O’Reilly who won the Angela Carrington Award at the Vortex last night.

Here’s a report from London Jazz, including a video clip from Rachel’s performance at the little bread Big Jamboree earlier this year.

Last year’s winner was Annie Dehaney-Steven . Further proof that little bread Big Jam “best represents the spirit of open mic nights in London” … probably.

Here are the videos, filmed undercover, by Olivier:

February Big Jamboree – Review

12 03 2010

” … so successful … a shame it had to end”

John Wallbank reviews February’s Big Jamboree:

I confess that like all good critics I arrived a little late and missed the first three numbers. My first impression was the size of the audience: it took me a couple of minutes to find a chair. The two featured artists, Sue Jameson and Peter Sellars, had done a great selling job and had found an enthusiastic and receptive audience.

The playlist was an eclectic mix: one rarely hears Lush Life and Bring Me Sunshine at the same gig. I was impressed that Sue gave each song an individual reading, giving each lyric a narrative purpose. Peter’s violin accompaniments were tasteful and never too intrusive. His solos were a great demonstration of melodic interpretation. This was an evening when everything gelled: it was not two soloists and a rhythm section, but a mighty swinging quintet (and sextet when they were joined by Jamie Thompson on alto saxophone). As an ensemble, they all seemed to enjoy the evening as much as the audience. There were great solos from Gabriel Keen on keyboards and Kevin Dunford on bass, including a musical joke from Kevin. Dave Hawthorn on drums held things together brilliantly, reminding me of Cannonball Adderley’s description of his drummer, Roy Haynes, “Roy takes care of business”.

The whole show was well-presented, and Andy Dehaney-Steven should be congratulated on the good sound balance. The lighting, combined with the table layout and dressings, turned the room into a warmly lit and welcoming venue. The Jamboree was so successful, it was a shame it had to end.

February Big Jamboree – Fri 26th Feb

26 01 2010

Friday 26th February 2010 Doors 8 pm – Show at 8.30 pm Time Out listing

Featuring Sue Jameson (vocals) and Peter Sellars (violin)

with the band: Gabriel Keen (piano), Kevin Dunford (bass) and Dave Hawthorn (drums)

The Heathcote Arms is at 344 Grove Green Road, E11 4EA

Come to the Heathcote for an evening of laid-back gentle jazz presented by vocalist Sue Jameson, violinist Peter Sellars and the lbBJ trio.

Sue Jameson is a charismatic singer specialising in songs from the down-to-earth end of the jazz repertoire: upbeat standards with witty lyrics, slow and smoky blues, as well as dark stories of tragic affairs and misbegotten love.

Peter Sellars, unavoidably influenced by Stéphane Grappelli, brings a distinctive edge to the performance, while providing a poignant contrast to Sue’s engaging presence.

Listen to Sue on MySpace (her Equity-registered name is Lily Thompson)

The Heathcote is a landmark East London boozer, providing traditional pub hospitality at reasonable prices in a comfortable setting. It hosts a variety of entertainments including the long-established jazz jam session on Wednesday nights. The jam session is now successfully incubating these monthly Big Jamborees.

It’s a perfect setting for a sociable Meetup with jazz and conversation. And bring your instruments to join in the final blues!
